Đắt lúa tẻ, rẻ lúa nếp

Chỉ tình trạng giá trị và nhu cầu tiêu dùng bị đảo lộn: khi khó khăn, người ta chuộng thứ thiết yếu nên mặt hàng thường kém giá lại bán chạy, còn thứ vốn được coi trọng lại ế và phải hạ giá. Cũng dùng để nói chung rằng thứ này được chuộng thì thứ kia mất giá, tùy hoàn cảnh mà giá trị lên xuống trái với lẽ thường.

This refers to a reversal of normal value and demand: in hard times, people buy basic necessities, so the usually less valued item becomes expensive while the more prized one goes cheap. It is also used more broadly to describe situations where one thing rises in demand as another loses value, contrary to the usual order.
